mindfulness

Degas

In the evening of these waning days,
my heart reaches out to gather
times past.
Thoughts are obsessed with memory
elixirs easing stinging
effects of this breath.
Mind not to rest in
haunting enemies of the past.
Rather, delight in love then and now.
As I hold onto the light
that has nurtured me this lifetime,
I see a family with a young child.
My tears reflect time passed
too quickly with many moments
gone in oversight.
I want time back
and I need that child
to release me into the fullness
of my adulthood.
A glance and a smile promises
hope of such escape.
Acknowledge a thought and
bid it farewell
to accept newer times
in brighter days
absorbed in green leas
in sheltering skies.
It is here that
I shall grow old.

O that I should prosper
if the music stops.
It is the quiet angst of a failing melody.
The dove’s cry wanes
as anxious sun rises
procuring new thoughts
onto old frames.
I bid farewell to summer days
as all too much of my elan
languishes on apathetic and stale
warm winds soon to cede to northern
breezes harboring watercolor changes
and freezing still waters.
The traveling birds are ready
for a journey onto warmer leas
and I, for lack of much else,
also feel ready for a change.

Hopeful Fall

degas autumn

Edgar Degas

Summer quietly comes and stays
exposing most of my restless ways.
Apathetic breeze blows without reason;
cringing heart decries this season.
I wonder if, after all,
my life will settle upon hopeful Fall.
And wringing hands of sultry ways
will cool with sight on cooler days.
Peace subsides with downcast eyes
as darker days mask bluer skies.
And a smile returns to malleable soul
as God Himself shall make me whole.
